SÁNCHEZ IN PHILADELPHIA
The Unknown Boricuas + Prisoner: Abu Ghraib by Juan Sánchez will be exhibited at Taller Puertorriqueño Feb 12 - Mar 27, 2010. The Brooklyn born Puerto Rican artist "documents the juxtaposition between political prisoners and civil rights leaders, questions powers of politics and religion, and brings to light the lesser-known histories of the Puerto Rican liberalist movement." AFRICA IN PUERTO RICO
In order to bring contemporary African art to the Caribbean (and Caribbean art to Africa), raise money for the Nakuru Residency programm and provide some income to the participating African artists, el-status.com is preparing El papel africano, an exhibition featuring approx. 20 artists from Kenya, Uganda and Tanzania.

A few works from artists and artisans who form a group called Deep East Africa already found their way to us and are for sale. Enjoy seeing something else!

FROM SAN JUAN TO BEIJING
Puerto Rico's art fair CIRCA is over. Read the El naufragio de las palabras and the Flavorwire reviews and the news about the censored ArteFoundation show SEX SELLS that was thus mounted in a gallery outside CIRCA.
As the fair has signed in its 5th year of existence a cooperation with Art Beijing (Apr 29-May 2, 2010) you might want to go to China to see Puerto Rican art.
Those who visited CIRCA might be able to help me answer these questions:
1) Who are Rica The Gallery (a project by Roberto Nieves?), CL Gallery and Galeria Veve (a virtual gallery? run by whom?), all supposedly located in San Juan (names copied from circapr.com)?
2) Who is Jorge Díaz Torres who was featured at CIRCA - anybody has a link/contact?
3) Who is Coro Gráfico (an urban art/graffiti collective?)?
EL TALLER BORICUA TURNS 40
The Puerto Rican Workshop, an artist-run non-profit gallery located on Lexington Avenue in New York, is calling New York Puerto Rican artists to submit their proposals for the anniversary show and artists in general to submit proposals for the 2010/2011 exhibition calendar. Deadline: Feb 15, 2010. Download pdf | tallerboricua.org

NATIONAL ART EXHIBITION
The Muestra Nacional de Artes Plásticas (MNA 09) opened on Dec 9, 2009 in the Arsenal de la Puntilla in Old San Juan and will close on Feb 28, 2010.
Many criticised the inclusion of the already famous painters (without being able to say, why those should not be included...) and of some not yet good enough newcomers. Most praises went to Elsa Maria Meléndez' work (a collaboration with sound artist Claudio Chea) and to Omar Vazquez' installation. Both base their work on printmaking but take it to a threedimensional level. Yes, some "important" artists (also from the Diaspora) were missing - but were they not acepted by the jury or did they forget to submit a proposal?

El-Status.com is an independent platform that helps you to enter the fascinating Puerto Rican art scene (on the island and in the Diaspora) without having to leave your desk.
The database containing information on more than 850 artists is the core of this website.
But el-status.com it is also a tool box for artists and institutions in Puerto Rico that want to connect with the outside world through fairs and biennals, contests, field trips and correspondence.
This site is for art lovers, curators, art historians, collectors, art institutions, art critics, students and art dealers around the globe - in short: For you!
Enjoy!
