SHOW YOUR ART IN CALIFORNIA!
All artists of Puerto Rican origin are invited to get in contact with Phil Correa, an art student who is organizing an exhibition in the Arts and Recreation Center "ARC" in the City of Baldwin Park, California.
According to the young organizer, approx. 45,000 Puerto Ricans live in the Los Angeles area but their culture and especially art is little known in the region. The exhibition is open to artists from graffiti to ceramics. The space is limited and the confirmation deadline is June 20, 2008.
The exhibition will open on August 8, 9 and 10, 2008 with a gala. The costs for exhibiting 3 (three) art works is $ 35. Artists may set their own prices, Phil keeps 10% of the sales. For entry forms and more information contact Phil Correa in California: phone 626 324 4524 or Phiz41@yahoo.com.
Please spread the word - especially among the California based Puerto Rican artists you might know but also among artists on the Island and elsewhere who are interested in supporting Phil's effort.
NET ART AND NET VIDEO
From May 29, 2008 on we can turn to 0508.dondeveoarte.com to see what the Colectivo de NetArt + NetVideo is busy doing... el-status.com supports the activity together with other cultural platforms such as tranceliquido.com, msa Xperimental, El Box Score (blog), dondeveoarte.com, frentesonico.com and Orificio. To see the list of artists, click!
WHAT ELSE IS GOING ON
Several websites are dedicated to listing cultural activities but dondeveoarte.com and Los Balcones de San Juan simply do it best! So while in Puerto Rico, be sure you check these agendas regularly.
PUBLiCA 2: EL-STATUS.COM IN CAGUAS
The PUBLiCA project brings the diversity of local publishing to light: a great opportunity to find magazines and e-zines, stickers and blogs, T-shirts and posters that talk about life, arts and politics. El-status.com will be featured on a computer and offers flyers to take away. ÁREA - Lugar de proyectos, Caguas, Puerto Rico. May 31 (opening from 4 pm on) till June 7, 2008. Download flyer (jpg).
EL PULGUERO DE LOS ARTISTAS
We're currently preparing a "look back on the event" page under el-status.com/pulguero. Stay tuned to find out, what this April experiment brought to all of us!
SOME STATISTICS
Since its launch on June 30, 2006 the el-status.com database has been growing constantly. On March 31, 2008 it included details on exactly 737 contemporary Puerto Rican artists among other resources. The website visitors (3939 different visitors alone in March 2008, more than 40'000 total) are coming from over 101 countries, from Andorra to New Zealand, and el-status.com has maintained a high ranking in Google. Up to date this project has been financed 100% by the founder.

How come Puerto Rican art is so little known in the international contemporary art circle and even less exhibited or collected? - Is there a connection between this deficit and the unresolved political status of one of the world's last colonies? - Should Puerto Rican art be labeled geographically or politically, as Caribbean, Latin American, American, Global or Colonial?
Trying to answer these questions is one of my research goals since 2004/2005. But starting to change something is the motivation behind this website that went online in 2006.
El-Status.com is an independent platform that helps you to enter the fascinating Puerto Rican art scene (on the island and in the Diaspora) without having to leave your desk.
Also it is a growing tool for artists and institutions in Puerto Rico that want to connect with the outside world through fairs and biennals, contests, field trips and correspondence.
This site is for art lovers, curators, art historians, collectors, art institutions, art critics, students and art dealers around the globe - in short: For you!
Enjoy!
